Read What a White Reporter wrote in a Georgia Newspaper about President Obama:

Andrew M. Manis is associate professor of history at Macon State College in Georgia and wrote this for an editorial in the Macon Telegraph.

Andrew M. Manis: When Are WE Going to Get Over It?

For much of the last forty years, ever since America “fixed” its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, “When are African Americans finally going to get over it?” Now I want to ask: “When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color?” Recent reports that “Election Spurs Hundreds of Race Threats, Crimes” should frighten and infuriate every one of us. Having grown up in “Bombingham,” Alabama in the 1960s, I remember overhearing an avalanche of comments about what many white classmates and their parents wanted to do to John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Eventually, as you may recall, in all three cases, someone decided to do more than “talk the talk.”

Since our recent presidential election, to our eternal shame we are once again hearing the same reprehensible talk I remember from my boyhood.

We white people have controlled political life in the disunited colonies and United States for some 400 years on this continent. Conservative whites have been in power 28 of the last 40 years. Even during the eight Clinton years,
conservatives in Congress blocked most of his agenda and pulled him to the right. Yet never in that period did I read any headlines suggesting that anyone was calling for the assassinations of presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or either of the Bushes. Criticize them, yes. Call for their impeachment, perhaps. But there were no bounties on their heads. And even when someone did try to kill Ronald Reagan, the perpetrator was non-political mental case
who wanted merely to impress Jody Foster.

But elect a liberal who happens to be Black and we’re back in the sixties again. At this point in our history, we should be proud that we’ve proven what conservatives are always saying — that in America anything is possible, EVEN electing a black man as president. But instead we now hear that school children from Maine to California are talking about wanting to “assassinate Obama.”
Fighting the urge to throw up, I can only ask, “How long?” How long before we white people realize we can’t make our nation, much less the whole world, look like us? How long until we white people can – once and for all – get over this hell-conceived preoccupation with skin color? How long until we white people get over the demonic conviction that white skin makes us superior? How long before we white people get over our bitter resentments
about being demoted to the status of equality with non-whites?

How long before we get over our expectations that we should be at the head of the line merely because of our white skin? How long until we white people end our silence and call out our peers when they share the latest racist jokes in the privacy of our white-only conversations? I believe in free speech, but how long until we white people start making racist loudmouths as socially uncomfortable as we do flag burners? How long until we white people will stop insisting that blacks exercise personal responsibility, build strong families, educate themselves enough to edit the Harvard Law Review, and work hard enough to become President of the United States, only to threaten to assassinate them when they do?

How long before we starting “living out the true meaning” of our creeds, both civil and religious, that all men and women are created equal and that “red and yellow, black and white” all are precious in God’s sight? Until this past November 4, I didn’t believe this country would ever elect an African American to the presidency. I still don’t believe I’ll live long enough to see us white people get over our racism problem. But here’s my three-point plan: First, everyday that Barack Obama lives in the White House that Black Slaves Built, I’m going to pray that God (and the Secret Service) will protect him and his family from us white people.
Second, I’m going to report to the FBI any white person I overhear saying, in seriousness or in jest, anything of a threatening nature about President Obama. Third, I’m going to pray to live long enough to see America surprise the world once again, when white people can “in spirit and in truth” sing of our damnable color prejudice, “We HAVE overcome.”

It takes a Village to protect our President!!!

  2. Hopefully as the author of this piece (which I LOVE by the way) you have prepared yourself to become a member of the minority within your race and feel the wrath that accompanies it. I’ll pray for YOUR safety as well as our President’s.

Thank you for hitting the nail squarely on the head, sir.

  3. President Obama was not my first choice for president (not because of his skin color) however, he is our president now, and we all need to support and show the respect the office that President Obama now holds.

I agree with this article. “Yes, I am predigests, against stupid people”. If you choose to be stupid and not take responsible for yourself and your families please, don’t look at anyone else for your failure just take a look in the mirror then, fix it. If we all did a little more of this and less finger pointing we would all be better off. We all need to learn to judge people by their individual actions and not the reactions of others.

  5. I left Opelousas, La. to join the United States Air Force in 1960. My purpose was to suppost a country of people with freedom to continue the mistreatment of what we were called then[Negroes/Niggers], who had no rights for nothing. I was stationed in Asia, Europe, the Islands and different parts of the USA. All of the people I met were the same[white folks]but it wasn’t them who needed to change it was me. I hated them like they hated me, and I was a Christian. These were my brothers and sisters in Christ as God is our Father. The Lord changed my heart ont my mind. Christ said in John 13:34-35″ A new commentment I give unto you and you love one another as I have loved you. That yoou also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples if you have love one to another.” My point…If those of us who understand the Lord, and what He is saying: we knoe that He is saying…. He demonstrated His love towards them on a day to day basis and so must the do the same toward each other. By doing so our love for each other will draw those who are not christians to Him because of what they see in us as christains[My how much those christian folks love each] Therefore I blame christians who attend church every week but has a poor demonstration of their love towards others of color. So, for those who are christains Don’t go to Africa and say you are willing to die for Christ when you won’t even fellowship with your black brothers and sister in the USA. I want us, my brothers and sisters to change..Now. Practice the love you preach and teach about. The president is just another man. Kill him with Godlove. I am certain that he needs in us like you do. Personally I am glad that I have learn to love everybody and want the very best for them. THIS IS WHAT I PREACH AND TEACH AT NEW GRACE COVENANT ASSEMBLY OF GOD INC. IN BESSEMER ALABAM. GOD BLESS YOU AMERICA.

  6. This is so sad. So sad that only a few white Americans will read this. So sad that the many Black Americans who read this has fear, live in fear, to pass this on. So sad that every principle we believe in, every lesson we are taught, and every sermon we hear has no substance of truth as they never apply to those many Americans who are in power, strive for power kill, cheat, lie, steal for power and just plain think they are in power because they are white or associated with Whites. We all work for them, we all see them, heck we all hear them but we dare not say or do as they do or say…..
Arm yourselves. To live and play in their world, today, we must prepare ourselves to take it over tomorrow. Grab your swords! That’s what me and my boys call our Bibles. We are warriors of the LORD. Read your bibles. Pray. Pray harder. Do things. Do the right things, all the time. And Love thy neighbor, each of thy neighbors. Let’s make this sadness a happiness and joyful beginning to a better life for you, me, President Barrack Obama, his family, and our nation.
Thank you author, Andrew Manis, for your words, your care, and your love for all. May this love be blessed and multiple as ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE IN GOD.

  10. Hello, I am back, John L. Thomas, and I want to inform all of you that we have not changed. Why? The hate is still showing in some of our churches. Brothers in Christ let us be christian men and take our families by the hand and ask The Lord to change us so that our example will see others change. We can do it[Jeremiah 33:3]
